Year 1 - Geography
Local area: where do we live?
This unit investigates the area around school and home by identifying local features, exploring buildings, using simple maps, collecting data on how we travel to school, and describing familiar routes using basic geographical vocabulary.
You can share your ideas about how you could investigate the local area and help plan fieldwork in the street outside your school.
Geographers sometimes draw maps from memory, e.g. a map showing things in a street outside school. Geographers investigate places by going outside to gather information in different ways and we call this fieldwork.
Fieldwork is investigating the outdoors using geographical tools and thinking to gather information or data.
Mistake: All streets outside schools across the country have all of these features and look the same. Correction: The street outside your school is unique to your school. There might be all, some or none of these features. There could be features outside your school that are not mentioned here.
