Year 1 - Maths

Order and compare decade numbers on number tracks

Counting in tens - decade numbers

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will extend their counting to counting the decade numbers which will later be known as multiples of ten and making representations of them using a variety of different manipulatives.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to order the decade numbers 0-100 on a number track and say which number is greater than or less than another.

Key Notes

  • Decade numbers can be ordered on a number track by counting in tens or by looking at the number of tens in the number.
  • You can compare decade numbers using greater than and less than.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • Greater than: Greater means a larger amount, so if a number is greater than another, it represents a larger amount.
  • Less than: Less means a smaller amount, so if a number is less than another, it represents a smaller amount.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Children may think that only consecutive numbers can be ordered.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

Decade numbers can be ordered on a number track by counting in tens or by looking at the number of tens in the number. You can compare decade numbers using greater than and less than.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'Greater than'

Greater means a larger amount, so if a number is greater than another, it represents a larger amount. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: Children may think that only consecutive numbers can be ordered. Correction: Order non-consecutive numbers, then place back with other numbers on number track to consolidate understanding of their relative size.
