Data compression
In this unit pupils will be introduced to the concept of data compression and why it is needed. The will compare lossy and lossless compression methods and their typical uses. They will have the opportunity to compression methods such as run length encoding (RLE) and Huffman coding.
You will learn to compare lossy and lossless data compression.
Data compression is either lossy and lossless. Lossy data compression permanently removes some data to reduce file size.
a compression method where data is permanently lost during the process. Add one real device or system example to prove understanding.
Mistake: Lossy compression always results in a poor quality file that is not as usable as the original version. Correction: Lossy compression removes data that is considered unnecessary or less noticeable, which may not impact the perceived quality of the file, especially to the human eye or ear.
