In this unit pupils will be reminded of how the base-10 number system works before being introduced to the base-2 number system. They will perform conversions between binary and decimal and recognise the rules of binary addition and subtraction. They will be introduced to hexadecimal and its uses.

Computers use binary to represent all data and instructions. Binary is a number system consisting of 1s and 0s.

Mistake: Computers use binary for data and instructions but they can use other number systems just as easily. Correction: Computers have to use binary as they are powered by electrical circuits which contain transistors which can be switched on and off using electricity. Using other number systems would require more complex circuitry.
