Year 10 - Geography
Coastal landscapes
This unit teaches pupils about coastal processes and landforms. Pupils will learn about the physical processes operating at the coast and about the formation of distinctive landforms of coastal erosion and deposition. Pupils will also learn about the importance and options of coastal management.
You will learn to explain the role sediment transportation and deposition play in forming coastal depositional landforms.
Sediment transportation (longshore drift) and deposition (constructive waves) operate at the coast. Processes of transportation and deposition influences coastal landforms (spits, beaches, bars).
refers to the vertical section of water from the surface to the sea bed.
Mistake: Spit formation occurs solely from sediment deposition. Correction: Longshore drift, wave and wind direction play an important role in the formation of spits, and a change in direction of the coastline is required.
