Tropical rainforest and taiga biomes
This unit teaches pupils about tropical rainforest and taiga biomes. Pupils learn about its biotic and abiotic characteristics, the adaptations of plants and animals and the threats facing its biodiversity. The unit considers opposing views on protecting and exploiting resources.
You will learn to explain that, compared to tropical rainforests, the taiga has low productivity, a lower rate of nutrient cycling and supports lower levels of biodiversity.

Mistake: Because the taiga is covered with trees it must have rich soils from all the leaf litter that accumulates. Correction: Taiga soil is nutrient-poor due to slow decomposition in cold temperatures. This means nutrients stay locked inside the trees and litter, rather than entering the soil. As a result, the soil is often thin, acidic and nutrient-poor.
