Structure and bonding
This unit explores changes of state, particle kinetics, and energy transfers in relation to chemical bonding, including ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds. It examines carbon's unique bonding properties, leading to organic compounds and materials like diamond, graphite, fullerenes, and graphene.
You will learn to compare pure metals with their alloys, and give examples of alloys and their uses.
Iron is alloyed with other metals to produce steel alloys. Copper is alloyed with other metals to make multiple useful alloys.
A mixture of two or more elements, where at least one element is a metal. Include the word in a full scientific explanation, not as a single label.
Mistake: Pupils often find it difficult to apply what they have learnt about alloys when asked about an unfamiliar one, or when provided with a table of data. Correction: Provide pupils with a range of different examples of alloys. Give them plenty of practice of comparing the properties of the alloy with those of the pure metal.
