Year 11 - Science
Groups of the periodic table
This unit explores how elements' reactions are related to electron arrangement and atomic number. It covers the properties of Groups 1, 7, and 0 and explains how these depend on outer electrons. It also predicts element reactivity and reactions based on their positions in the periodic table.
You will learn to describe applications for Group 0 elements and explain how their properties are determined by their electronic structure.
Group 0 elements are called noble gases (or inert gases) and are very unreactive with other elements. Group 0 elements can be described as having either full or empty outer electron shells.
An inert substance is one which is not chemically reactive. Include the word in a full scientific explanation, not as a single label.
Mistake: Spelling of noble re- Nobel and the concept of why they were given this name, i.e. due to having a full outer shell of electrons which means they do not need to bond with other elements. Correction: Explain that the name noble was due to the fact that they are so unreactive and did not need to bond with other elements due to already having a full outer shell of electrons making them so stable.
