Nuclear physics
This unit covers atomic structure, isotopes, radioactive decay, and half-life. It explores alpha, beta, and gamma radiation, nuclear fission and fusion, and the uses of radiation in medicine, highlighting differences between contamination and irradiation.

A nuclear equation shows the particles in a nuclear decay, including the electric charge and mass number of each one. An alpha particle consists of two protons and two neutrons, has a mass of 4 and charge of +2.

Mistake: Pupils may not have a clear understanding of the forces acting between neutrons and protons in an atomic nucleus.
