In this unit, pupils learn to spell homophones, near-homophones and new consonant spellings.
You will learn to spell words containing the representations of the 'l' phoneme: 'il' and 'al'.
The 'il' and 'al' representations are usually found in polysyllabic words. There are not many words ending in 'il'.

Mistake: Pupils may confuse the 'al' and 'il' spellings with other similar-sounding endings or 'l' spellings. Correction: Be explicit about the irregularities and exceptions in English and use phonics, word games and pattern spotting to reinforce spellings.
