'Grandad's Island': book club
In this unit, pupils read and explore the picture book, 'Grandad's Island'. They explore the characters, setting and plot and share their thoughts and opinions on the story. Finally, they identify and discuss the key themes of family and separation.
You will learn to respond to the story by thinking from the characters' perspectives.
We can find out what a character is like in a variety of ways, including using the illustrations. The setting is where the story takes place, such as the island, or Grandad's house.

Mistake: Children may think that there can only be one setting in a story. Correction: Explain that the setting may change in a story and talk through the different settings in 'Grandad's Island'.
