'Leaf': book club
In this unit, pupils read and explore the picture book, 'Leaf'. They develop their understanding of the plot through rich discussions. Finally, they identify and discuss the key themes of belonging, kindness and the environment.

Vocabulary in a story can generate a description of a character, such as the use of "stomping" and "destructive". Descriptions of a character may change throughout the story as demonstrated through vocabulary, such as "lonely".

Mistake: Children may think characters can only be portrayed in one way, e.g. either as safe or dangerous. Correction: A character can be described in a variety of ways. This can signal a change in their circumstances or demonstrate different impressions.
