'Yoshi the Stonecutter': reading
In this unit, pupils read and explore the text, 'Yoshi the Stonecutter'. They use a range of strategies to decode words and build reading fluency. Finally, they learn to sequence the story and make connections to the text.
You will learn to read part of a traditional tale.
Proper nouns have capital letters and can involve more decoding skills than understanding skills. Sounding out using phonics strategies is our most helpful way to decode unfamiliar words, such as "whispered".

Mistake: Children may find it difficult to read words that are unfamiliar or not always decodable with phonics strategies e.g. 'carriage'. Correction: Firstly, ensure that your school's chosen SSP has covered the GPCs covered in the book. Before independent reading, pull out words that you think the pupils may struggle with to pre-teach them this vocabulary and practise strategies.
