  • When we add one, we can see this as the number after in our count. We can think of this as one more.
  • When we subtract one, we can see this as the number before in our count. We can think of this as one less.
  • Adding two from an even/odd number, we can see this as the even/odd number after. We can think of this as two less.
  • Subtracting two from an even/odd number, can be seen as the even/odd number before. We can think of this as two less.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • One more: The number after a given number is one more than it.
  • One less: The number before a given number is one less than it.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Children may resort to counting strategies to find the difference e.g. counting back to subtract. Children may incorrectly identify the even/odd number 'before' or 'after' the one given.
