Year 2 - Maths
Secure fluency of addition and subtraction facts within 10
In this unit pupils will revisit addition and subtraction within ten. They will consolidate addition and subtraction strategies.
You will learn to recall known addition and subtraction facts within 10.
When we add one, we can see this as the number after in our count. We can think of this as one more. When we subtract one, we can see this as the number before in our count. We can think of this as one less.
The number after a given number is one more than it. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may resort to counting strategies to find the difference e.g. counting back to subtract. Children may incorrectly identify the even/odd number 'before' or 'after' the one given. Correction: Provide practice for children to identify numbers before/after or odd/even numbers before/after a given one. Initially, allow children to use a number line. Remove this scaffold once feeling more confident.
