Year 2 - Physical education

Zigzag pathways on apparatus

Gymnastics: linking movements and balances

Unit Summary

This unit will challenge pupils to explore linking movements and balances together incorporating flow. Pupils will create and perform sequences on apparatus focussing on jumps, rolls and balances. Pupils will reflect on how to link movements and balances while travelling along a variety of pathways.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to create a sequence of movements that flow while travelling along a zigzag pathway using the apparatus.

Key Notes

  • Move: linking quality movements on a zigzag pathway, on apparatus, requires control, pointed fingers and toes and flow.
  • Think: using apparatus to move along, over, under, through to create a zigzag pathway sequence, requires imagination.
  • Connect: considering others' feelings and needs when safely sharing the apparatus demonstrates excellent empathy
  • Feel: courage enables us to be brave when trying out new ideas and developing quality actions while using the apparatus.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • quality: movements and balances that are performed correctly
  • pathway: the route (path) from one place to another
  • apparatus: equipment made for a particular task

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils do not perform quality actions because they don't point their toes. They either pull their toes towards their body, so their ankle is 90 degrees, or their foot is in a relaxed position.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: linking quality movements on a zigzag pathway, on apparatus, requires control, pointed fingers and toes and flow. Think: using apparatus to move along, over, under, through to create a zigzag pathway sequence, requires imagination.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'quality'

movements and balances that are performed correctly.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils do not perform quality actions because they don't point their toes. They either pull their toes towards their body, so their ankle is 90 degrees, or their foot is in a relaxed position. Correction: Some pupils will need to be taught how to point their toes. Remind them to push their feet away, making their legs look longer. Practice with everyone at the beginning of the lesson.
