Year 3 - Maths

Measure the mass of objects using grams

Measures: mass and capacity

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will use weighing scales up to 1kg and measuring tools for volume and capacity up to 1 litre. They will measure mass from 0 to above 1kg using whole kg and grams and measure volume from 0 to above 1 litre using whole litres and ml.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to measure the mass of objects using grams.

Key Notes

  • Scales can be used to measure the mass of objects.
  • Scales are marked in different ways.
  • Counting in 10s, 20s, 50s and 25s helps to read scales.
  • Knowing the composition of 100 helps to determine the value of the unmarked intervals.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • Mass: Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains. It is measured by how much something weighs. Mass can be measured in grams.
  • Gram: A gram is a metric measure of mass. A paper clip has a mass of about 1 gram. The abbreviation is g.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Misreading of scales by counting marks rather than equal parts in between the marked intervals.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

Scales can be used to measure the mass of objects. Scales are marked in different ways.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'Mass'

Mass is a measure of how much matter something contains. It is measured by how much something weighs. Mass can be measured in grams. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: Misreading of scales by counting marks rather than equal parts in between the marked intervals. Correction: Remember to look at the number of equal parts in between the marked intervals then use your knowledge of the composition of 100.
