Year 4 - Art and design
Dream portraits: drawing and digital design
This unit explores how dreams have inspired artists, especially the Surrealists. Pupils will illustrate a piece of dream text, then learn how to draw and shade a sleeping portrait, before transforming it into a digital design.
You will learn to create a dreamscape inspired by a text.
Dreams can inspire artists to create artwork, like the Surrealists. Dreamscapes use a combination of the artist's imagination, ideas from dreams and things observed in reality.
the view of a dream, imagined by the artist.
Mistake: Artists need to observe from reality to make art. Correction: Remind pupils that art can be an observation, but it can also be taking an idea we have in our heads and making it into an artwork.
