Year 4 - Computing

Analysing data using a computer

Data logging

Unit Summary

In this unit, pupils will consider how and why data is collected. They will explore how sensors monitor the environment. Pupils will collect data as well as access data captured over long periods. They will look at data points, data sets, logging intervals and use a computer to analyse data.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to recognise how a computer can help us to analyse data.

Key Notes

  • Computers make it easier and faster to analyse large amounts of data.
  • Data can be displayed in summary form or in more detailed views.
  • Data can be sorted by different fields to make it easier to spot trends or locate specific information.
  • Data can be presented in tables, charts, graphs, or maps, depending on what is most useful for understanding it.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • analyse: to look at something in more detail to further understand it
  • data set: a collection of related data that has been structured in some way
  • import: copying a file or data into a program from a different program
  • export: saving a project in a file format so that it can be used in another program

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Data collected by a data logger can only be used in the data logging software.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Describe the system or process from this lesson in clear steps.

Computers make it easier and faster to analyse large amounts of data. Data can be displayed in summary form or in more detailed views.

2. Define this computing term and give one practical example. 'analyse'

to look at something in more detail to further understand it. Add one real device or system example to prove understanding.

3. Correct this common computing misconception.

Mistake: Data collected by a data logger can only be used in the data logging software. Correction: You can export the data from the data logging software into a spreadsheet that then allows you to perform lots of operations on the data.
