Year 5 - Maths
Multiplication by partitioning leading to short multiplication (3 by 1-digit)
In this unit pupils will multiply a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using expanded and short multiplication.
You will learn to use estimation to support accurate calculation.
Use times tables and place value to estimate the product of a 3-digit by a 1-digit multiplication. Use expanded short multiplication to multiply a 3-digit by a 1-digit number.
A way of recording the steps of a calculation focusing on partitioning one or more factors and showing partial products. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils attempt to estimate using approximations that do not allow for quick mental calculation. Correction: Spend time estimating yourself and modelling the simplicity of it. Use estimations regularly to check the magnitude of an answer.
