Year 6 - Art and design
War and conflict in art: textiles
This unit can be linked with pupils' studies in other curriculum areas on World Wars. They will draw from observation and investigate how artists have responded to war and conflict through textiles, before using their personal ideas of conflict to create an appliqué panel.
You will learn to use a variety of stitches to join and embellish fabric.
While stitches can be used to join textiles, they are also used in a skilled and decorative way through embroidery. Embroidery samples can be useful for an artist to remind them how to achieve a particular look or effect.
decorating fabric using a needle and thread.
Mistake: Stitches are just used to join materials together. Correction: Remind pupils that while stitches can be used to join materials together, they are also used in a skilled and decorative way through embroidery.
