Year 6 - English
The Empire Windrush: essay writing
In this unit, pupils use research of the Empire Windrush to write an essay about why the Windrush Generation immigrated and what life in Britain was like for them. Pupils write formally throughout, using facts and varied sentence structures, and they follow a clear line of argument across the essay.
You will learn to use your research to plan and write the second section of an essay about the Windrush.
Writing is most successful when structure, content and vocabulary is planned. Information in this section should be specific and detailed.
linguistic structures that can enhance text flow.
Mistake: Pupils may write the full section as one paragraph. Correction: Parts of the plan are explicitly allocated into paragraphs one and two. This is also modelled in the second learning cycle.
