Comparing fractions
In this unit pupils will use their fraction sense to explain how to compare pairs of non-related fractions either by converting to common denominators or using fraction knowledge and understanding.
You will learn to explain which strategy for comparing non-related fractions is most efficient.
If the numerator is the same, the greater the denominator, the smaller the fraction. If the numerator is the same, the greater the numerator, the larger the fraction.
When two or more fractions share the same denominator, you can say they have a common denominator. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils look to convert all fractions so that they have a common denominator in order to compare them. Correction: The vast majority of fractions can be compared without common denominators. To support this, pupils need to have a strong sense of the magnitude of the fractions they are comparing. Do not feel you need to move away from bar models too quickly.
