In this unit pupils will use their knowledge of the composition of seven-digit numbers to round them and to solve problems, adding and subtracting numbers whilst crossing the millions boundary.

- Sometimes numbers are rounded as approximations or to give an estimate or average.
- To round to the nearest multiple of 1,000,000 identify the previous and next multiples of one million and the midpoint.
- When we round to the nearest multiple of one million, the critical digit is the 100,000s digit.
- If the critical digit is a 4 or less, we round to the previous multiple of one million.
- If the critical digit is a 5 or more, we round to the next multiple of one million.

- Midpoint: The midpoint is the middle of something, in this case the middle of two points on a number line. It is the point halfway between two things, or numbers.
