In this unit pupils will use their knowledge of the composition of seven-digit numbers to round them and to solve problems, adding and subtracting numbers whilst crossing the millions boundary.
You will learn to round seven-digit numbers to the nearest million.
Sometimes numbers are rounded as approximations or to give an estimate or average. To round to the nearest multiple of 1,000,000 identify the previous and next multiples of one million and the midpoint.
When we round, we make a number simpler but keep its value close to what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may not understand the concept of 'nearest multiple of 1,000,000'. Correction: The nearest multiple of 1,000,000 is the multiple of 1,000,000 that a given letter or number is closest to. If a number is before than the midpoint, this will be the previous multiple and if it is after, this will be the next multiple.
