Year 7 - Art and design
An overview of craft
This unit explores the world of craft, learning practices and significance, and engaging in handmaking their own projects. Pupils will use specialist materials and tools, research notable craftspeople, and enhance their practical skills and appreciation for craftsmanship.
You will learn to define what craft is and challenge traditional boundaries.
Craft is designing and hand-making unique objects, building creative, intellectual, and practical skills with tools. Craft was seen as lesser than Fine Art because it was functional and often practised by women.
the designing and hand making of individual objects and artefacts.
Mistake: Craft is only about making functional objects and is less important than Fine Art. Correction: Craft is the creation of objects and artworks requiring both artistry and technical skill. It includes both functional and non-functional items and embraces contributions from all genders and communities.
