Year 7 - French

What people are not going to do: negation with two-verb structures

My plans: aller + infinitive

Unit Summary

In this unit, pupils use 'aller' plus infinitive to express future intentions for weekend and holiday plans. Knowledge of negation is extended to include two-verb structures and inversion questions are practised in two-verb structures. The SSCS qu and j are revisited.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to form negative sentences with two-verb structures to express what you and others are not going to do.

Key Notes

  • Many French words containing [qu] are cognates. English words ending in -c, -k and -cal often change to -que in French.
  • When learning a foreign language it is important to practise vocabulary 'little and often' to strengthen knowledge.
  • Sentences can be made negative by adding 'ne ... pas' around the main verb.
  • In sentences with two verbs, 'ne ... pas' goes around the first verb (in its short form).
  • To express future plans we use 'aller' + infinitive, in this case 'ne...pas' would surround the form of 'aller' used.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • [qu]: Sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) like the [qu] in 'quoi'.
  • negation: Two elements e.g. ne ... pas, around main verb expressing negative meaning.
  • ne ... pas: French adverb which fits around the main verb in a sentence to mean 'not'.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • We put the 'ne ... pas' together after the main verb to form a negative sentence.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain what you can now say or understand in this lesson.

Many French words containing [qu] are cognates. English words ending in -c, -k and -cal often change to -que in French. When learning a foreign language it is important to practise vocabulary 'little and often' to strengthen knowledge.

2. Define this key language word and use it in context. '[qu]'

Sound-symbol correspondence (SSC) like the [qu] in 'quoi'. Say or write it in a short sentence so you use the word actively.

3. Correct this common language-learning mistake.

Mistake: We put the 'ne ... pas' together after the main verb to form a negative sentence. Correction: The 'ne ... pas' is in two separate parts and must be placed either side of the main (1st) verb in the sentence.
