Year 7 - German
Improve your lifestyle: modal verbs 'müssen', 'dürfen', 'wollen'
This unit extends pupils' knowledge of two-verb structures with 'können' with the introduction of 3 new modal verbs. It teaches pupils how to use these in practical general situations, using the pronoun 'man' and the determiner 'jeder'. Pupils consolidate a range of sound-symbol correspondences.
You will learn to use strong verbs, modal verbs and 'jed-' when explaining the rules of a game, and complete a dictogloss task to reinforce your understanding and use of language.
A strong verb has a vowel change in the verb stem of the 2nd and 3rd person singular forms. Modal verbs (e.g., 'können') are used with an infinitive, which is placed at the end of the sentence.
a verb which changes its vowel in the verb stem of some of its forms. Say or write it in a short sentence so you use the word actively.
Mistake: Strong verbs have a vowel change in all parts of the verb. Correction: Strong verbs have a vowel change in the 2nd and 3rd person singular forms of the verb only (e.g., 'ich werfe', 'du wirfst', 'sie wirft').
