Year 7 - Physical education

Basic flight using jumps and turns

Gymnastics: body control and paired sequences

Unit Summary

This unit will explore core gymnastics skills both individually and in combination. Pupils will develop their stability whilst holding their own body position and when supporting a partner. They will learn how to give appropriate feedback to others on posture and the execution of short sequences.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to use jumps and turns to create flight and can develop a sequence which incorporates jumps to demonstrate flight.

Key Notes

  • Move: performing quality jumps requires bending the knees, swinging the arms for height and controlling the landing.
  • Move: a turning jump involves combining a jump with a controlled rotation of the body whilst in the air.
  • Think: recognising quality turning jumps when observing others helps you identify strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Feel: practising and performing new and more complex turning jumps on apparatus helps to develop self-confidence.
  • Connect: performing turning jumps with good timing alongside a partner requires excellent communication skills.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • flight: when in the air, not touching the ground or any equipment
  • jump: pushing off the ground or equipment with our legs to go up in the air
  • turning: changing the direction your body is facing by rotating the body around a vertical axis

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • When jumping from apparatus, pupils may rush the jump and not be balanced before they take off. Pupils may land with stiff knees or poor body position.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: performing quality jumps requires bending the knees, swinging the arms for height and controlling the landing. Move: a turning jump involves combining a jump with a controlled rotation of the body whilst in the air.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'flight'

when in the air, not touching the ground or any equipment.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: When jumping from apparatus, pupils may rush the jump and not be balanced before they take off. Pupils may land with stiff knees or poor body position. Correction: Always check balance and engage the core before jumping. Ensure a solid stance before jumping. Pupils should bend their knees to absorb impact on landing and make sure their weight is centered over their feet.
