Batting shots to outwit the fielders off a T

Striking and fielding games: competition and performance analysis in cricket

Unit Summary

This unit will develop techniques for batting in cricket whilst bringing in statistical analysis to help with decision making. Fielding skills will be refined before overarm bowling is refined to enable games of pairs cricket.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to use a range of drive shots to hit the ball away from fielders.

Key Notes

  • Move: stepping the front foot forward gets the body into position to hit a drive shot.
  • Think: different batting strokes are needed to send the ball away from the fielding team.
  • Think: constantly assessing the fielders positions will give you the opportunity to find gaps.
  • Feel: hitting the ball between fielders to create scoring opportunities provides a sense of satisfaction.
  • Connect: being silent while the batter is about to take their shot shows respect for others and etiquette.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • front foot: the batter's foot which is nearest to the bowler
  • drive: a batting stroke played on the front foot
  • tee: a device used to hold the ball in place to practice hitting off

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Many pupils do not move their feet in response to the pitch of a ball, instead keeping their feet in the same place throughout. This leads to awkward and ineffective swings at the ball.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: stepping the front foot forward gets the body into position to hit a drive shot. Think: different batting strokes are needed to send the ball away from the fielding team.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'front foot'

the batter's foot which is nearest to the bowler.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Many pupils do not move their feet in response to the pitch of a ball, instead keeping their feet in the same place throughout. This leads to awkward and ineffective swings at the ball. Correction: Using tees slows down the thought process so that footwork can be learned before facing a moving ball. Almost every shot requires some foot movement and the stance should allow for this by being on balls of feet and with knees slightly bent.
