Unit Summary

This unit teaches pupils about the growing demand for natural resources and the different renewable and non-renewable ways humans try to meet their needs. Pupils will learn the impact of overexploitation and some of the ways natural resource exploitation can be managed.

You will learn to describe different types of fishing and explain why fish stocks are reducing.

Key Notes

• Commercial fishing normally includes less sustainable methods, e.g. trawling.
• Longlining and trap fishing are more sustainable fishing methods.
• Fish farming, or aquaculture, is the controlled breeding and harvesting of fish in enclosures.
• In 2018 nearly 90% of the world's marine (sea) fish stocks were fully exploited, overexploited or depleted.
• Overfishing, bycatch and marine habitat damage are some of the concerns associated with fishing.
