Acids and bases
This unit covers acids, alkalis, and their neutralisation reactions, the pH scale, and the reactions of acids with metals and alkalis. It also examines the chemical properties of metal and non-metal oxides. Emphasis is on evaluating risks, using appropriate techniques, and making observations.
You will learn to describe what happens during a neutralisation reaction and write word and symbol equations to represent different neutralisation reactions.
Neutralisation reaction general equation is: base + acid → metal salt + water. Sodium hydroxide has the formula NaOH(aq) and hydrochloric acid has the formula HCl(aq).
When a chemical reaction takes place between an acid and base to produce a neutral solution of a metal salt and water. Include the word in a full scientific explanation, not as a single label.
Mistake: Pupils often do not understand what neutralisation is i.e. exactly the correct quantities of components from the acid and base combined to form water. Correction: It is worth emphasising that water is formed and it is this which is neutral as it contains the hydrogen and oxygen atoms from the acid and base.
