Year 1 - English
Speaking and listening
In this unit, pupils develop speaking and listening skills by answering questions about themselves, giving and following instructions and retelling a story. They focus on clear speech, attentive listening, maintaining eye contact and responding in full sentences with relevant answers.
You will learn to listen to and answer questions about myself.
Successful listening includes looking at the person speaking and paying close attention. Successful speaking includes speaking loudly and clearly enough for everyone to hear.
using your voice to talk to someone.
Mistake: Pupils will often answer questions with one word answers. Correction: Model to pupils speaking in full sentences and always provide speaking frames (this can be verbally) to support pupils answering in full sentences.
