Year 1 - English
Speaking and listening
In this unit, pupils develop speaking and listening skills by answering questions about themselves, giving and following instructions and retelling a story. They focus on clear speech, attentive listening, maintaining eye contact and responding in full sentences with relevant answers.
You will learn to give and follow instructions.
Instructions are sentences that tell us how to do something. Successful speaking includes speaking loudly and clearly enough for everyone to hear.
tell us how to do something.
Mistake: Children may struggle to give short, simple instructions and may add in too many steps. Correction: Model short, simple instructions before children are asked to complete Task B. Share some non-examples of long or complicated instructions. Remind children to always stop and wait after each instruction.
