Year 1 - Maths

Add and subtract two from odd numbers within 10

Addition and subtraction facts within 10

Unit Summary

In this unit pupils will explain that addition is commutative. They will find pairs of numbers to 10 and add or subtract 1 from any number. Pupils will also develop their knowledge and understanding of odd and even numbers and that even numbers relate to doubling and halving.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to add or subtract two from odd numbers within 10.

Key Notes

  • Adding two to an odd number gives the odd number after.
  • Subtracting two from an odd number gives the odd number before.
  • When we count forwards in odd numbers, we add two more each time.
  • When we count backwards in odd numbers, we subtract two each time. The result is two less.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • Odd: Any integer (not a fraction) that cannot be divided exactly by 2
  • Even: Any integer that can be divided exactly by 2 is an even number. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Children may incorrectly identify the odd number 'before' or 'after' the one given.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Solve this in steps: explain the method from this lesson and why each step matters.

Adding two to an odd number gives the odd number after. Subtracting two from an odd number gives the odd number before.

2. Use this key word in a maths sentence and explain it clearly. 'Odd'

Any integer (not a fraction) that cannot be divided exactly by 2. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.

3. Spot and fix this common maths mistake.

Mistake: Children may incorrectly identify the odd number 'before' or 'after' the one given. Correction: Provide practice in the form of missing number problems where children must identify the odd numbers before or after one given. Do this until fluent. Initially, allow children to use a number line. Remove this scaffold once feeling more confident.
