Year 1 - Physical education

Effect of exercise on our breathing

Health and wellbeing: the effects of exercise

Unit Summary

This unit will teach pupils to identify changes in their heartbeat and breathing when they exercise. Pupils will begin to understand how exercise makes them feel both physically and mentally. Pupils will develop their knowledge of the positive impact exercise has on our bodies and lifestyles.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to identify changes to your breathing when you exercise.

Key Notes

  • Move: exercise and rest causes our breathing to get faster and slower.
  • Think: breathing faster and deeper enables our body to take in more oxygen, which is our body's energy.
  • Feel: showing courage enables us to be brave and think of our own ideas.
  • Connect: playing fairly with others shows gratitude so everyone can enjoy the game.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • breathing: the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to bring in oxygen
  • exercise: being physically active while playing a game or performing an activity
  • oxygen: an important gas needed by most life forms on Earth to survive

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils may not recognise that during exercise, the depth of breathing changes as well as the speed per minute. Depth of breathing is a more abstract concept than how many breaths are taken per minute.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: exercise and rest causes our breathing to get faster and slower. Think: breathing faster and deeper enables our body to take in more oxygen, which is our body's energy.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'breathing'

the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to bring in oxygen.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils may not recognise that during exercise, the depth of breathing changes as well as the speed per minute. Depth of breathing is a more abstract concept than how many breaths are taken per minute. Correction: As well as taking more breaths per minute during exercise, a child will take deeper breaths each time. This is also a way for the body to get more oxygen.
