Computer Systems
In this unit pupils will discover the difference between general purpose and embedded systems. They will examine computer architecture and the components that make up a processor. Pupils will recognise the need for storage and be able to select a suitable storage device for a given purpose.
You will learn to describe the purpose of RAM, ROM and cache in a device.
RAM is volatile and ROM is non volatile. RAM stores data and instructions currently in use.
random access memory — temporary memory used to store data and instructions that the CPU needs while the computer is running. Add one real device or system example to prove understanding.
Mistake: RAM stores data and instructions when a computer is switched off. Correction: RAM is volatile — when power is switched off, the data and instrucions are lost.
