Year 10 - English
Leave Taking: a sense of belonging
In this unit, pupils start their exploration of Winsome Pinnock's play, 'Leave Taking'. They first learn about the play's context of 1980s Britain and the Windrush generation before then reading and exploring the full play. They finally explore themes and characters before working on essay writing.
You will learn to explain what happens in Scene Five of 'Leave Taking' and explore the relationship between Viv and Del.
Del is pregnant and is going to raise her child alone. Viv offers Del the money their mother gave her for her university education.
If you are loyal to someone, you are faithful to them. You don't do anything that would undermine your relationship with them.
Mistake: Del hates the education system and school. Correction: Whilst Del did not have a positive school experience, she knows the value of education, hence her extreme reaction to Viv skipping an exam.
