Year 10 - French

Étudier à Paris : 'aller' + infinitive, future tense -er verbs

People and Lifestyle: Mes projets

Unit Summary

This unit contrasts the near future (aller + infinitive) with the simple future of regular and common irregular verbs. In addition there is a focus on negation, introducing ne...plus and ne ...pas encore, and a revisit of the use of avoir + noun where the English equivalent is 'BE + adjective'.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to discuss the opportunities for studying in France, using future structures to make plans and suggestions for the future.

Key Notes

  • 'Aller' + infinitive describes what is going to happen; it tends to be used in more informal conversation and writing.
  • The simple future expresses what will happen; it tends to be used in more formal contexts for predictions or promises.
  • Most consonants at the end of words are silent, e.g. 'tu mangeras'.
  • It is helpful to practise verb manipulation, e.g. 'jouer', 'je joue', 'je vais jouer', 'je jouerai'.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • aller + infinitive: 2-verb future structure meaning 'going to' + infinitive
  • simple future: French 1-verb future tense meaning 'will' + verb

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • All -er verbs use the infinitive as the stem for the simple future tense.

Mistake: All -er verbs use the infinitive as the stem for the simple future tense. Correction: Some -er verbs require a small change to the stem before adding the correct simple future ending, for example 'acheter', 'compléter' and 'protéger'. For each verb, the first -e changes to -è.
