Year 10 - Physical education

Scrums, lineouts and kicking

Non-examined assessment: rugby union practical

Unit Summary

This unit provides pupils with the knowledge and opportunity to replicate skills in isolation and in performance scenarios in rugby. As a popular team sport offered by many pupils it will cover passing/ receiving, ball handling, tackling, rucking, scrums, line outs, kicking and decision making.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to perform in a scrum, lineout and use accurate kicks to gain metres.

Key Notes

  • Move: arms are extended straight after release, to ensure the ball enters the scrum/lineout straight.
  • Move: follow through with an upward motion of the kicking leg to kick the ball higher.
  • Think: scrums and lineouts restart play and involve all forwards to create space elsewhere on the pitch for the backs.
  • Feel: confidence to apply new skills in a competitive environment requires repeated practice.
  • Connect: respecting the value that different shapes and body sizes bring to the game of rugby helps team cohesion.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • lineout: how play is restarted after the ball goes into touch
  • scrum: how play is restarted after a stoppage caused by a minor infringement of the laws
  • up and under kick: a high kick to run on to and challenge for the ball in the air

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • In order to get the highest marks in GCSE PE moderation I need to be very good at all the specialist skills in rugby.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: arms are extended straight after release, to ensure the ball enters the scrum/lineout straight. Move: follow through with an upward motion of the kicking leg to kick the ball higher.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'lineout'

how play is restarted after the ball goes into touch.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: In order to get the highest marks in GCSE PE moderation I need to be very good at all the specialist skills in rugby. Correction: Rugby allows for different body shapes that suit specific positions, meaning players do not need to master every specialist skill. Forwards focus on scrums, lineouts and physical contests, while backs excel in speed, passing and kicking.
