Measuring and calculating motion
This unit covers vector-scalar distinctions in displacement, distance, velocity, and speed. It explores speeds, acceleration, motion graphs, and formulas for uniform and non-uniform motion. It also includes understanding circular motion and conducting accurate measurements, and calculations.
You will learn to choose and use different equations to calculate different motions.
Average velocity = distance travelled ÷ time. Average acceleration = change in velocity ÷ time.
The initial velocity of an object is the velocity it starts with during a phase of motion. Include the word in a full scientific explanation, not as a single label.
Mistake: Pupils often apply equations incorrectly or do not spot obvious errors when using them due to not thinking about the science. Correction: Ask pupils to describe what happens for each example in relation to their answers to problems set.
