Year 11 - Physical education

Injury prevention and the benefits of high intensity exercise

Health and wellbeing: HIIT and couch to 5k team challenges to develop fitness

Unit Summary

This unit will develop pupils' understanding of the principles of training through a running programme that stretches them as an individual but also their contribution to a team. Their cardiovascular endurance will improve whilst taking responsibility for their own training.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to prevent injuries when sprint training and understand the benefits it has on metabolism.

Key Notes

  • Move: sprinting requires a relaxed yet vigorous arm swing, with elbows bent at 90 degrees.
  • Move: completing an effective warm up prepares muscles and avoids injury.
  • Think: appreciating sprint training boosts metabolism by increasing calorie burn both during and after exercise.
  • Feel: pushing your body hard in short bursts leaves you breathless, muscles burning, but energised and accomplished.
  • Connect: working out together is motivating and supportive and makes the experience more enjoyable.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • interval training: training alternating between high intensity periods and periods of low intensity recovery or rest
  • warm up: a whole body exercise done before physical activity to prepare the body for exercise and reduce the risk of injury
  • lactic acid: chemical produced by the body when it breaks down carbohydrates for energy with limited oxygen supply

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Pupils think interval training is completed to increase speed and power only.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain the lesson in two key points.

Move: sprinting requires a relaxed yet vigorous arm swing, with elbows bent at 90 degrees. Move: completing an effective warm up prepares muscles and avoids injury.

2. What does this key word mean in this lesson? 'interval training'

training alternating between high intensity periods and periods of low intensity recovery or rest.

3. Correct this common mistake.

Mistake: Pupils think interval training is completed to increase speed and power only. Correction: The rest intervals are really good to enhance stamina and cardiovascular endurance. The intense workout does develop power especially in the lower body muscles which supports injury prevention when running.
