Year 2 - English

The fourth join: wl, oh and ot with no lead in

The four joins and break letters, with no lead-ins

Unit Summary

In this unit, pupils learn to form each of the four joins without lead ins. They practise using diagonal and horizontal strokes to connect letters and identify 'break letters' that do not join. Pupils also learn how to form looped descenders and how to end a join with a lead out.

Lesson Summary

You will learn to correctly form the fourth join.

Key Notes

  • The letters are formed by following the right starting point and direction.
  • The fourth join goes from the x-height line up towards the ascender line.
  • The letters l and h reach up to the ascender line. The letter t reaches between the x-height line and the ascender line.
  • You do not lift your pencil when joining until the letter string is complete.
  • The cross for the letter t is added once the letter string is complete.

Vocabulary To Learn

  • join: how things connect
  • lead out: the stroke or line that guides us to smoothly finish a letter
  • ascender line: this is the top line of the tramlines
  • x-height line: the line that x-height letters reach
  • letter string: a group of letters that are written together in a word

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  • Children may lift their pencils to form the joins.

3 Quick Questions (With Answers)

1. Explain this English learning goal in two key points.

The letters are formed by following the right starting point and direction. The fourth join goes from the x-height line up towards the ascender line.

2. Define this language term and use it in a sentence. 'join'

how things connect.

3. Correct this common English misunderstanding.

Mistake: Children may lift their pencils to form the joins. Correction: Remind the children that the letters are joining and holding hands. If you lift your pencil then you are breaking the chain.
