Year 2 - Maths
Addition and subtraction of two 2-digit numbers
In this unit pupils apply their knowledge of known facts and understanding of place value to add and subtract with 2-digit numbers both within and across the tens boundary.
You will learn to create problems involving the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers.
When creating problems, we must decide whether we want to create an addition or a subtraction problem. Addition problems can involve combining two parts to make the whole.
Addition involves finding the total, or sum, by combining two or more numbers. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children can have difficulty creating problems because they cannot process the amount of information needed and organise their thinking in the way necessary to know how to start. Correction: Give criteria, such as the context, the numbers involved, an equation to represent, or a given structure of addition or subtraction to help focus and structure their thoughts.
