Year 2 - Maths
Introduction to division structures
In this unit pupils will use practical resources to model and explain when objects can and cannot be grouped or shared equally. They will then represent practical situations using division expressions and equations.
You will learn to use a division story to write a division expression.
Dividing into equal groups can be recorded as a division expression. 8 divided into groups of 2 can be recorded as 8 ÷ 2.
Division means splitting into equal parts or groups. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may confuse the size of each group with the number of groups when reading and understanding an expression. Correction: Focus on the whole and dividing this into groups of a certain size, modelling this with visual representations, without discussing the number of groups at this point.
