Year 3 - Maths
Column addition
In this unit pupils will identify the addends and the sum in column addition. They will use their knowledge of place value to correctly lay out column addition.
You will learn to use column addition to solve problems.
Estimate the answer first to improve your accuracy. The addends are written in columns with the same value digits in the same column.
An addend is a number added to another. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may not refer to the size of the numbers when manipulating the digit cards. Correction: Encourage them to talk about the size of the numbers and whether the digit cards represent ones, tens or hundreds.
