Year 3 - Maths
Column addition
In this unit pupils will identify the addends and the sum in column addition. They will use their knowledge of place value to correctly lay out column addition.
You will learn to use known facts and strategies to efficiently calculate and check column addition.
Consider each calculation to see whether column addition is the most efficient method to use. Use strategies to help check calculations.
Being efficient means finding a way to solve a problem quickly whilst also maintaining accuracy. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Pupils may struggle with estimation, especially with thinking of numbers that are quick and easy to calculate with. Correction: Pupils will probably have little or no experience of rounding but they will be able to think about the place value of numbers and give tens or hundreds numbers that are close. Number lines may be helpful for some children.
