Year 3 - Spanish
What I and others have: 'tener' and singular nouns
In this unit, in the context of talking about belongings, pupils learn that nouns have grammatical gender and that this determines the word for a/an. They learn to use the first, second and third person forms of the verb 'tener' and that most adjectives come after the noun.
You will learn to use 'tiene' with nouns to understand about the belongings someone else has. you can recognise, pronounce and read aloud new words with [ci].
Sound-symbol correspondence [ci] sounds different in Spanish and English and benefits from frequent practice. 'tiene' is part of the verb 'tener' and means 'she, he, or it has'.
sound-symbol correspondence. Say or write it in a short sentence so you use the word actively.
Mistake: Spanish verbs always need pronouns, like in English ,to convey the person doing the action. Correction: Spanish verbs don't always need pronouns. When 'tiene' follows a name or noun it just means 'has'. Otherwise 'tiene' refers to the 'she', 'he' or 'it' that is the subject of the sentence and means 'she, he, it has'.
