Relationship between the 3 and 9 times tables
In this unit pupils will explain the relationship between multiples of 3 and multiples of 9 and use it, along with the tests of divisibility for the 3-, 6- and 9-times tables, to solve problems.
You will learn to explain the relationship between pairs of 3 and 9 times table facts that have the same product.
In a multiple of nine, there are three times as many threes as nines. 1 group of 9 is equal to 3 groups of 3.
A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Lack of fluency in the 3s and 9s times tables can lead to pupils being slower to grasp the generalisation about the relationship between the 3 and 9 times tables. Correction: Model using arrays and other representations. Pupils who may struggle to triple / find one third of a number may require more time to work through calculations. Multiplication grids could also be provided while pupils become more fluent in recall.
