Year 4 - Maths
Review of fractions
In this unit pupils will identify equal parts when they do not look the same related to equivalence. They will construct a whole when given a part and the number of parts.
You will learn to explain the size of the part in relation to the whole.
If the whole is the same, then two parts can be compared directly. If the whole increases whilst the part stays the same, then the part becomes a smaller part of the whole.
The whole is all the parts or everything, the total amount. Use this word when showing your method, then check your final answer is reasonable.
Mistake: Children may struggle to understand that parts change size when the whole changes. A relative size of a part that stays the same whilst the whole changes is a tricky concept. Correction: What do you notice? What is the same? What is different?
