Year 4 - Physical education
Athletics: athletic challenges developed
This unit will challenge pupils' integrity and resilience when developing their sprinting technique, analysing their own performance. Pupils will compare sprinting to running for distance and pacing. The unit will introduce throwing for distance with javelins and explore the basics of triple jump.
You will learn to explore ways to jump as far as possible using a combination of hops, steps and jumps.
Move: we must swing our arms back for takeoff and forward during the different stages for power and balance. Move: to perform a standing triple jump we must hop, step, jump in sequence and link the actions together smoothly.
a track and field event where an athlete performs a sequence of three jumps to cover as much distance as possible.
Mistake: Pupils often think the triple jump consists of a step, step and jump, rather than a hop, step and jump. Correction: Allow pupils time to practise hopping and stepping and highlight the difference between the two. Pupils must understand that a hop requires them to land on the same foot they took off on, and a step is from one foot to the other.
