Year 5 - English
Key grammar terminology, including determiners and fronted adverbials
In this unit, pupils review previous learning about articles and possessive pronouns and they learn two new determiners: quantifiers and demonstratives. They review that fronted adverbials can be single words, phrases or clauses and that any fronted adverbial gives detail of time, place or manner.
You will learn to understand when to use an article and when to use a possessive pronoun in sentence context.
Determiners are a word class. A determiner introduces a noun in a clause or phrase.
a word that introduces a noun in a clause.
Mistake: Pupils may find it difficult to connect the determiner to the noun when adjectives are in between. Correction: Remind pupils that adjectives describe nouns - can they spot the noun the adjectives describe to help them find the determiner?
